The Viking axe is often called a "battle axe" or "Danish axe." There are several types of Viking axes, but the Danish axe, characterized by its large blade and long handle, is one of the most famous.
The Vikings used axes primarily for two reasons: combat and everyday tasks. Axes were versatile weapons, effective for slashing, piercing, and breaking enemy shields. They were also used for chopping wood, building houses and boats, and other daily chores.
The Vikings used a variety of weapons, including axes, swords, spears, bows and arrows, as well as knives and clubs. They also used shields for protection in combat. Weapons were often made from iron and wood, and sometimes decorated with patterns and symbols.
Viking axe forging was a craft process carried out by skilled blacksmiths, who used forging, bending, and welding techniques to shape iron and create sturdy, functional axes. Axes were often forged from several pieces of iron, some harder to form the sharp blade, while others were softer to absorb shocks during use. The handles were usually made of wood and carefully fitted to the axe head to ensure a firm and comfortable grip.
